The first feature film by Jane Campion, Oscar winner as a director in 12 years, The power of the dog, had enough to wag its tail when it debuted at the weekend on Netflix: Samba TV reports that Thomas Savage’s 1967 Western novel feature film drew 1.2 million American homes.
It’s a good start for what is essentially a two-hour and six-minute arthouse title, superior to HBO Max’s first weekend of king richard 70% (707,000 households measured by Samba in the United States), respectively 36% and 84% compared to the comedy-drama Ted Melfi from Netflix Starling (883K American homes) and Rebecca Hall’s Who passed (653K U.S. households) and even more than HBO Max’s first weekend soprano prequel function The many saints of Newark, which drew 1 million homes in the United States in its first three days. More interesting: The power of the dog Are 300,000 American households behind the 5-day premiere figure for the first Disney + episode of Hawk Eye which attracted 1.5M.
Admittedly, Netflix has a much larger footprint than the Disney + and HBO Max frush streamers in the US and Canada; the streamer run by Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos has approximately 74 million U.S. households. Samba TV measures 3 million US Smart TV households that have tuned in to a series or movie for five minutes.
The power of the dog follows Montana breeding brothers Phil and George Burbank in the early 20th century, the first fierce and lively and the other less intense, played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons respectively. George falls in love and marries Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst) much to Phil’s chagrin, who also has her for his son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). However, Phil finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.
